Technical Overview
Cloud Hosted Router (CHR) is MikroTik’s RouterOS build for virtual machines — deployable on VMware, Hyper-V, Proxmox, KVM, VirtualBox, and cloud platforms including AWS and Azure. It runs the same RouterOS feature set as physical RouterBOARD devices, but CHR licensing works differently: it’s licensed by throughput tier rather than by a hardware-bound Software ID.
| CHR License | Throughput |
|---|---|
| Free | 1 Mbps |
| P1 | 1 Gbps |
| P10 | 10 Gbps |
| P-Unlimited | Unlimited throughput |
Who Should Buy This License
- WISPs and enterprises running RouterOS as a virtual router or firewall
- Cloud teams needing site-to-site VPN concentrators without physical hardware
- Developers and network engineers testing RouterOS configurations before hardware rollout
If you’re licensing physical RouterBOARD or x86 hardware instead, see RouterOS Level 4, 5, and 6.
Software ID — Not Used for CHR
Unlike RouterBOARD hardware, CHR licensing is tied to a virtual disk signature rather than a physical Software ID, so the purchase flow will differ slightly from Level 4/5/6. CHR perpetual licenses can also be transferred between virtual machines using your MikroTik account. We’ll publish a dedicated CHR licensing and activation guide when it launches here.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use CHR for free in the meantime?
Yes — the Free CHR tier runs at 1 Mbps throughput, useful for evaluation and light testing. For production traffic you’ll need a P1, P10, or P-Unlimited license.
Will CHR use the same Software ID popup as RouterOS Level 4/5/6?
No. CHR licensing is tied to a virtual disk signature rather than a physical device’s Software ID, so the purchase flow will differ. We’ll publish a dedicated CHR licensing guide when it launches.
Can CHR licenses be transferred between virtual machines?
Yes. CHR perpetual licenses can be transferred between virtual machines using your MikroTik account.
