Prepaid RouterOS License Keys, Explained
You’ll sometimes see the term “prepaid key” in MikroTik’s own licensing terminology. Here’s what it actually means, and why our checkout still asks for your Software ID up front rather than issuing one.
What a Prepaid Key Is
In MikroTik’s licensing system, a prepaid key is a license that’s been purchased and paid for but not yet bound to a specific device’s Software ID. It exists as a credit that gets converted into a working, device-specific license key later, once the Software ID it should be issued against is known.
Why We Don’t Sell Prepaid Keys Directly
Prepaid keys exist mainly for distributors and resellers who need to stock licenses ahead of knowing which specific device they’ll activate. As a retail seller working directly with individual customers, we skip that intermediate step: we ask for your Software ID at checkout and generate a device-matched key immediately after manual verification, rather than issuing an unassigned prepaid credit you’d have to convert yourself later.
The practical result is the same license, delivered faster and with one less step — see our Buying Guide for the full purchase-to-activation path.
If You’re Buying for Multiple Devices
Ordering licenses for several routers doesn’t require prepaid keys either — each device simply needs its own order (or line item) with its own Software ID. Contact us for bulk orders, and we’ll verify each Software ID individually and can issue one consolidated invoice for the batch.
If you’ve received a prepaid key from another source (for example, as part of a distributor allocation) and need help converting it, that process goes through MikroTik’s own account and licensing system directly, not through our store — contact us and we can point you in the right direction.
