RouterOS Overview
RouterOS is the operating system that runs on every MikroTik router — from a small wireless access point to a core router carrying full internet routing tables. This page is a plain-English primer on what RouterOS licensing actually controls, for anyone buying a license for the first time.
What RouterOS Actually Is
RouterOS is software, not hardware. MikroTik ships it pre-installed on RouterBOARD devices, but the same operating system also runs as Cloud Hosted Router (CHR) on virtual machines. It handles routing, firewalling, VPN, wireless, QoS, and network management from a single, consistent interface — Winbox, WebFig, or the command-line terminal.
Why RouterOS Needs a License at All
MikroTik hardware ships with RouterOS pre-installed but running on a free, restricted trial license by default. To run it in production, the device needs a paid license matched to its intended role — from Level 4 for a single access point up to Level 6 for a core or border router. See the License Comparison for how the levels differ.
Level 4, Level 5, Level 6, and CHR
Level 4 suits small offices and starter WISPs, Level 5 suits growing ISPs, and Level 6 removes tunnel and user limits entirely for large ISPs and enterprises. CHR is the same RouterOS software built for virtual machines and cloud platforms (VMware, Proxmox, Hyper-V, KVM, AWS, Azure), licensed by throughput rather than by device role, and is coming soon to this store.
Where RouterOS Is Used
RouterOS runs everything from a single branch-office router to core infrastructure at large WISPs and data centres — anywhere that needs routing, firewalling, VPN termination, wireless AP/client roles, HotSpot authentication, or bandwidth management from one consistent operating system.
The Software ID, Explained
Every RouterOS installation generates a unique Software ID the moment it’s installed. This ID is what MikroTik’s licensing system uses to bind a license key permanently to that one device. You’ll need it any time you buy a RouterOS license — see our Software ID Guide for exactly where to find it.
